I’ve been doing a lot of calligraphy recently and I can’t seem to stop! I haven’t done proper calligraphy with a dip pen in years but I’ve been feeling like going for it again lately and so I have. I’d forgotten how fun it can be, but I still have a lot of practice to do on it. Just as well since I haven’t been able to paint anything I feel worth showing.
Anyway at some point yesterday I started writing in isiZulu and it felt a bit weird that I hadn’t done so before lol. Anyway here’s one that I got to digitally edit when I finally took a break ^_^
Loosely translated it basically means “You are mine o Lord” or “Lord, you are mine” (as in Psalm 119:57).
This felt so much like drawing… I love it. I picked up my nieces jumbo beginner pencil (it was the closest thing right then) and just doodled away. I erased and edited a LOT but it felt freeing lettering this way…
Here are a few more using a regular 2B pencil this time ^_^
I’ll think I might be vectoring these a bit later.
So I’ve been using the calligraphy tool in Inkscape to practise lettering quite a bit since discovering it a short while back. This is what I’ve been happy with enough to share (and upload to Etsy as printables ^_^) so far. Right now I’m working on some fonts in Fontforge and having inkscape makes the whole process that much smoother! I’ve never shared my fonts here before (I will soon!) but up til now I’ve been hand writing the letters before scanning and then having to edit and trace them ALL over again in the programme …Sometimes I wonder if I’m exploring too many of my passions at once but I just can’t resist! #^_^#
I’ve been terrible at keeping up with updating this blog the past week. I’ve been so busy with freelance work which has really picked up lately (not a word of complaint coming from me though! ^_~) so I’ve only been able to do a little personal art here and there to share with you all; mostly on instagram but I need to change that. So to wind down one of the days I did a lot of practice lettering and ended up with this being the better of my attempts. I’m planning on editing it digitally and adding in some flower doodles when I get time.
I’ve also been really lost about my direction in art lately but not being able to have a good long successive moment to take it all in and really think about it left me feeling rather low and some not mild anxieties. So when The Black Lion Journal posted an update on my art and journey nothing could have picked up my spirits better. I’m beaming and excited because TBL Journal is a site I have tremendous respect for and really enjoy their frequent and informative articles. I’m so appreciative of this. It would be fantastic if you went on to read it (but I can’t promise you that will be your last read on there! ^_^)
I havent’t handlettered anything this whole week and today was a good day as any to practise. I’m noticing I’m most comfortable lettering in this style, although sometimes I do try to variate a bit since I’m still exploring. I’ve noticed finding a style with lettering is just as involved as it is with art (which I still feel far from having figured out yet… all in due time).
The leafy doodling was fun. I did all of it in acrylic ink which gave us both a break to do something easier going since the last two paintings created a strain between us (Am I personifying the ink a bit too much? Lol =^_^=).
I’ve been feeling a little overwhelmed lately (by my own dreams no less)… and I couldn’t get anything done proper.
So I ended up doodling. Doodling always has a calming effect and I’m so glad I thought to do it, its been quite a while since I’ve done it. After I got two whole pages filled up; I felt good enough to edit a few on my computer. This is the first quote I put together:
